The road to the final
206 teams start in 52 groups: 50 groups of four and two groups of three. The top two from every group advance. The 24 highest-ranked group winners go straight to the knockout stage; the remaining 80 qualifiers contest 40 play-offs. That leaves 64 contenders chasing one title.
